The Scottish Government has allocated £6.5 billion to transport infrastructure between now and 2011.

Transport Scotland will spend £1.98 billion, £2.2 billion and £2.3 billion in 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11 respectively.

This includes funds for the £185 million Airdrie Bathgate rail project and £500 million towards Edinburgh City Council's new rail/tram interchange, connecting passengers to Edinburgh Airport.

Chief Executive, Dr Malcolm Reed, said: “Transport improvements play a vital role in delivering greater prosperity and opportunity for the businesses and people of Scotland.

“Day to day, managing our transport infrastructure and services by improving efficiency and quality is crucial to supporting economic growth. Longer term, the introduction of new rail services and better road links provide economic opportunity and the chance to make a lasting difference to the quality of people’s lives.”
