RG Carter, the East Anglian construction company, has announced it will lose almost five percent of its workforce by the end of the month.
The firm is a family business with an annual turnover of over £175 million. The redundancies are thought to be in the construction and joinery sector of the company’s Drayton headquarters.
The company said it was downsizing the number of employees to “more traditional levels” because of a “difficult economic cycle.” The company is currently in consultation to decide which workers will be affected.
“The company has told us it is proposing making up to 97 people redundant, mainly as a result of a downturn in work,” said Brian Rye, Regional Organiser of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT). “Volunteers are being considered but in the main they will be compulsory redundancies.”
“There will be appeals and we shall be involved in that,” he added.
