Barratt Developments is set to become the latest firm to axe staff to counter the slump in the housing market.

The housebuilder told staff yesterday, June 4, that it will loose around 15 percent from its 6,700-strong workforce.

The company said its cuts would be achieved by axing two of its 32 divisions, in Chester and Sheffield, and merging another eight into four.

This news comes just days after Taylor Wimpey’s announcement that it will lay off 900 staff and close 13 of its 39 regional offices.

Construction groups Galliford Try and Ballymore also said that they would be shedding 250 and 50 jobs respectively.

Paul Kenny of the GMB union said: "It is devastating news for the workers and their families. Unfortunately the credit crunch has given rise to a slowdown and we fear more job losses to come."
