Carillion has netted a £21million deal to connect Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, to the M80 national motorway; a move that it hopes will boost the region’s economy.

The company’s Scottish civil engineering division is based in East Dunbartonshire and will be behind the plans to make the four kilometer connection.

Preparation work to get the site ready for construction, including utility diversions, tree and plant clearing has already been carried out.

The building phase is expected to take around 18 months, with an expected opening date for the road in late 2009.

Regeneration

Commenting on the contract award, East Dunbartonshire Council Leader and KI Board Member, Rhondda Geekie said:

“The link road has always been a central part of the multi-million pound regeneration programme. Its construction is central to the delivery of many of the other proposed projects and will boost business and tourism in the area.

“Exciting things are happening in Kirkintilloch, we have a new state of the art leisure centre and work has also begun on a new £8 million custom built integrated care centre.

We’re not just investing in urban renewal but creating a better quality of life for residents and visitors.”
